Web design in Lancaster

I'm a web designer and developer based in Burnley, and I build fast, hand-coded websites for businesses in Lancaster. A city with this much going on — locals, students and visitors all looking for something different — needs a site that pulls its weight, not one that just sits there.

Getting found in Lancaster

Three sets of customers, one website

Lancaster isn't one market, it's three. You've got people who've lived here for years and want a reliable trade or a decent meal, thousands of students from the two universities looking for something close and quick, and visitors coming in for the castle, the Ashton Memorial or a walk along the Lune. They all reach for their phone and search, and they're not all searching for the same thing.

A website's job is to be there at that moment and make getting in touch the obvious next step. That's what I build. Not a brochure nobody opens, but a site that does some work for you while you're busy with a customer or out on a job.

I've built sites for service businesses across Lancashire and beyond, so I've a good idea what a small business actually wants from one. Most of the time it's a simpler thing than people expect — more of the right enquiries, and less faff getting there.

Why local helps

Someone you can actually get hold of

A lot of sites get built by agencies hundreds of miles off, or through a sign-up portal where you never speak to the person doing the work. It can turn out fine, but often it means slow replies and a site that could just as easily belong to a business in any other town.

I'm a Lancashire developer myself, down in Burnley. If you'd rather sit down and go through it properly, I'll come up and we'll have a coffee. And if you'd sooner keep it all to the phone and email, that suits me as well — that's how most projects run anyway.

  • You deal with me — No account manager, no ticket system, no call centre. Email me and it lands with the person building your site, and I answer it.
  • I know the area — I understand who a Lancaster trade, shop or café is trying to reach, and the spots nearby — Morecambe, Heysham, Carnforth, Galgate — you probably want work from as well.
  • Straight answers — If a feature isn't worth paying for, I'll tell you. I'd rather give you the honest version than talk you into pages you'll never use.
  • Easy to reach — A quick question after launch is a phone call or a message, not a support ticket that takes three days to come back.

How I build

Built by hand, ready for anyone

I write every site by hand. No drag-and-drop builder like Wix, and no WordPress theme weighed down with a dozen plugins that slow it to a crawl and fall over the moment one of them updates. I work in Laravel, the framework a lot of bigger firms run on, and it keeps a site fast, secure and easy to change down the line.

The phone screen gets designed first, because that's where most people in Lancaster will land on you — often a student or a visitor who's never heard of you until thirty seconds ago. So the pages have to load quickly, read clearly, and steer people toward the one thing that counts: calling, messaging, or filling in a short form. Nothing in the way.

Search gets thought about from the off, not bolted on later. I lay each page out so Google can tell what you do and which part of the country you do it in, and that's what gives you a fair shout at the "near me" searches around the city. There's no trick to it and it isn't overnight, but it's set up right to begin with.

Who it's for

The businesses I tend to help

Most of my work is with small, local businesses that live on people finding them and trusting what they see. If that's you, we'll get along. A few of the trades I build for again and again:

Trades

Plumbers, heating engineers, electricians, builders and joiners whose week is made or broken by the phone ringing.

Cafés & restaurants

Lancaster has a strong independent food scene. A clear menu, easy directions and a booking button that actually works on a phone go a long way.

Shops & independents

The independent retailers around the city that need a smart shopfront online to go with the one on the high street.

Garages & car services

MOTs, repairs, detailing — sites that show the standard of work and make booking in a simple thing to do.

Salons & barbers

A tidy site that shows off the look, lays the prices out plainly, and puts the booking link somewhere people can find it.

Professional services

Accountants, consultants and the like who need a site that looks established and earns a bit of trust before the first call.

Recent work

A few sites I've built lately

These aren't in Lancaster, I'll be straight with you, but they're the same sort of local, service-led business — and the way I approach it works just as well up here. Have a click through to the live sites:

How it goes

From first call to live site

01

Have a chat

Tell me about the business and what the site needs to do. Costs nothing, and I won't lean on you.

02

Fixed quote

I come back with a clear price and a sensible timeline in writing, before any work begins.

03

Design & build

I build it and show you where it's up to as I go, so there are no surprises at the end.

04

Go live

I handle the launch, test it on real phones, and from there you can leave it with me to look after if you like.

Questions

Web design in Lancaster — the common questions

How much does a website cost for a Lancaster business?

It comes down to the size of the site and what you need it to do. A neat site for a small shop or trade usually starts in the low hundreds, and the price climbs from there if you want extras like online booking or a stack of pages. Either way I work the job out properly first, so you have a fixed price in writing before I touch anything.

Do I have to be in Lancaster to work with you?

No. I'm down in Burnley, about forty minutes away, so I'm happy to come up and meet if you'd rather talk face to face. In practice most of a project happens over the phone, email and a preview link I send you, so a fair few clients I never end up meeting in person at all.

Can you help my Lancaster business get found on Google?

That's a big part of the job. I build each site so Google can work out what you do and where you do it, which gives you a proper chance of coming up when someone in Lancaster searches for it. I won't promise you the top spot by next week — nobody honest will — but the foundations are there from the start.

Will it work properly on a phone?

Yes, and that comes first. Most people are going to find you on their phone, often a student walking down Penny Street, so I design for the small screen before anything else and scale it up for laptops after. It loads quickly and the call and message buttons sit where a thumb can reach them.

Can you redo the website I already have?

Usually, yes. If your current site is slow, looks dated, or just isn't bringing in any enquiries, I can rebuild it from scratch. Where it's worth doing I'll keep the pages that are already earning you traffic from Google, so you don't slide backwards while the new one goes up.

Do you carry on looking after the site after it launches?

Only if you want me to. Some people are glad to take it over once it's live, others would sooner I handle the updates, backups and the odd change as the business shifts. There's an optional monthly arrangement for that, and no long contract tying you in.

Thinking about a website for your Lancaster business?

Tell me what you're after and I'll come back with a clear, fixed quote. No pressure, and none of the jargon.
